Eat less meat.

Global meat production has more than doubled since 1970 and is projected to double again by 2050. The dramatic rise in the demand for meat is driving a worldwide expansion of factory farming that is causing incalculable suffering to billions of animals.

Everywhere there are giant barns crowded with chickens in tiny cages, pigs in stalls where they can barely move or cattle crammed into feedlots where they are fattened on food that makes them sick. Their only release is the slaughterhouse.

But our insatiable demand for meat is not just bad for animals. It’s damaging our environment and putting our health at risk.

By cutting down or cutting out meat in our diet we can address all three problems.

VHS is supporting the recommendation of the international animal welfare organization Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), which calls for livestock production and consumption in developed countries to be reduced to one third below current levels by 2020 and to 60 per cent below current levels by 2050.
