Humane Society says Hilton’s incarceration gives her a glimpse of life for egg-laying hens
(Vancouver and California) The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) has asked heiress Paris Hilton to endorse the society’s Chicken Out! project, an initiative to end the use of cages for egg-laying hens, since Ms. Hilton’s own incarceration gives her special insight into the lives of caged hens.
“Ms. Hilton is lucky, she only has to spend 65 days confined to a jail cell,” says Bruce Passmore, the Farm Animal Welfare Project Coordinator for the VHS. “We think her incarceration experience will make her the perfect sympathetic voice for chickens confined to tiny wire cages.”
Approximately 95% of the nearly 300 million egg-laying hens in North America live in small wire cages where they can barely move, let alone flap their wings, dust bathe, nest, perch, or most other natural behaviours. More humane alternatives include certified organic, free-range or free-run.
The VHS sent a letter yesterday asking for Ms. Hilton’s endorsement and is awaiting her reply. Other celebrities supporting the campaign include Pamela Anderson, Twiggy and Minnie Driver.
