Pamela Anderson to Loblaw: tell Your Customers the Truth
Date: November 24, 2005
Canadian-born star supports animal welfare campaign, asks Loblaw to label eggs
(Vancouver) Just before traveling from her home in Los Angeles to her native British Columbia for the Grey Cup parade, Pamela Anderson took time from her hectic schedule shooting her new TV series and raising her two children to write to Loblaw Canada. Anderson is supporting an animal welfare campaign focused on convincing Loblaw, Canada’s largest grocery chain, to be truthful about the source of its eggs.

“I would like to support the request of the Vancouver Humane Society and the Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals for Loblaw to label all battery eggs as ‘eggs from caged hens,’” stated Anderson in a letter to Loblaw President John Lederer. “There is no reason why Loblaw cannot put up signs or label the shelves at point of purchase. This will allow consumers to decide for themselves whether or not they want to support this cruelty.”
The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) and the Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals (CCFA) recently released video and photographic footage of horrendous conditions on an egg farm in Ontario that is owned by a veterinarian and supplies the domestic market. (Video footage available in BETA CAM SP & DVD format and photos on CD, on request, or may be seen at www.humanefood.ca.)
In the video, hens are shown in a “battery” of wire cages, five to seven hens per cage, with the cages stacked five high. The birds suffer from severe feather-loss and are covered in feces. Several chickens had fallen into the three-foot high manure pit below to starve to death. Conditions on egg farms across Canada are similar, which is why VHS, CCFA and Pamela Anderson are asking Loblaw to label its eggs from farms where hens are caged – so kind Canadians can easily avoid supporting this cruelty.
Pamela Anderson will be appearing as Parade Marshall on Saturday, November 26 th at the Grey Cup Parade in Vancouver. She and her family will be attending the game the following day. She has been outspoken in her defence of animals, including her “Turn over a new leaf – go vegetarian” campaign for PETA.
